Audio Note Custom
L2 Linestage/Phono Preamp

Quick Start Manual

Thank you for choosing the Response Audio / Bella Extreme Audio Note Custom L2 vacuum tube preamplifier. This unit was designed to provide high performance with exceptional reliability.

The L2 Custom Linestage and it's optional phono stage offers high bandwidth, low distortion and exceptional musicality. We have modified this unit to allow an accurate, transparent and musical presentation with exceptional extension and air.

CAUTION: Do not use any other tubes other than those indicated in this manual or you will damage this unit as well as potentially damaging other components within your system.

Caution: Do not operate or power up this unit without tubes installed in their proper locations. Failure to do so will damage the power supply.

WARNING: Do not operate this unit without the cover lid securely fastened. This unit contains potentially lethal voltages. Failure to do so may result in serious injury or death.

Unpacking and Set-up:

Your L2 preamp has arrived without the vacuum tubes installed. Please see the tube layout photo below for

Please follow these quick steps in setting up your preamplifier.

1) Carefully unpack your preamplifier from its shipping container and remove the wrapping material.

2) Located the small bag labeled "Cover Screws" and set it aside.

3) Remove the 6 screws used to secure the cover during shipping with a small Philips screwdriver and set them inside the "Cover Screws" bag.

4) Inside the preamplifier chassis you will find the vacuum tubes. You should have one pair of 12AU7 signal tubes, one 6BM8 regulator tube and one 6X5/EZ35 rectifier tube.

5) Carefully install all the tubes in their corresponding locations as seen in the diagram on the next page. Please note the proper alignment of each tube type as indicated by the tube socket. Vacuum tubes can only be installed one way.

6) Install the cover with the "cover screws" provided.

Hooking your preamplifier into your system

This unit is fitted with an IEC input for use with detachable power cords. You should always use a grounded AC power cord with this product to maintain a proper connection with ground earth. Unless otherwise specified, this unit is for use with 120V-60Hz AC power. The main fuse is located in IEC connector in the back of the unit. It is accessible by removing the power cord and prying out with a small slotted screwdriver. Only replace the fuse with a 1A Slo-Blo type.

1) Place your preamplifier on a sturdy shelf. We do not recommend placing your preamplifier on carpet or a platform that is unstable.

2) Connect your source components (CD player, tuner, etc.) to the line level inputs marked on the back of the unit using high quality audio interconnect cables. NOTE: Unless your preamplifier has the built in phono stage, all inputs are "line level" and can be used with any source component.

3) Connect a set of interconnect cables from the "OUTPUT" RCA jacks on the rear of your preamplifier to the input RCA jacks of your power or integrated amplifier.
NOTE: If you have more than one set of "OUTPUT" RCA jacks on your preamplifier, these are both line level outputs and either can be used for your power amplifier, powered subwoofer or both sets used to biamp with two power amplifiers.

4) Making sure that the power switch located on the back of the unit (above the IEC unit) is switched to the OFF position, "O", install the power cord and plug it into your wall outlet. A power cord has been provided for you.

5) You are now ready to turn your system on.

Power-up procedure – FAILURE TO PROPERLY FOLLOW THIS PROCEDURE COULD RESULT IN DAMAGE TO YOUR AMPLIFIERS AND/OR SPEAKERS.

1) Turn on all your source components. i.e; CD player, DVD player, tuner, DAC, etc.

2) If any of your source components utilize tubes. Allow them to warm up for at least one minute before proceeding.

3) Turn the volume control on your preamplifier all the way down.

4) Turn on your new Audio Note Custom preamplifier. This unit utilizes tube rectification in the power supply and takes approximately one minute to reach proper operating current. It is very important to wait a minimum of 2 minutes before turning on your amplifier(s).

5) After your preamplifier has warmed up for a minimum of two minutes, it is now time to turn on your power/integrated amplifier(s). If you have any tubes in your amplifiers, it is important to wait a minimum of 2 minutes before proceeding.

6) Turn the source selector knob to the desired component you will be listening to.

7) Adjust the volume control to desired listening level.

When powering a system down, you should always turn your amplifier(s) off first, then your preamplifier and finally your source components. It is recommended that you wait approximately 30 seconds between shutting down components.

The vacuum tubes supplied with this unit should last a long time. However, should you need to replace any of the power tubes, you must first power the system down using the procedure indicated above and unplug the M2 preamplifier’s power cord. FAILURE TO DO SO MAY RESULT IN SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH.
